Andrew
qualified as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Cambridge
Veterinary School in 1967. He spent 5 years in cattle practice
followed by 3 years working on mastitis control. Since then,
he has worked almost exclusively in the British livestock breeding
industry. Prior to taking early retirement in October 2002,
he was Senior Veterinary Surgeon for Genus Breeding Ltd, the UK
division of the world’s largest cattle AI company and owners
of ABS Global, with full management responsibility for all the
Genus bull studs in the UK.
He is a Director of the British Livestock Genetics
Consortium (BLG) and acts as Veterinary Consultant to the Consortium.
BLG is a national pan-industry body formed to assist in the development
and maintenance of profitable long-term business generated by exports
of British livestock and genetics. It works closely with
the British Government to identify priority markets, to establish
workable export protocols and to gain market access.
He acts as Veterinary Consultant to both
the British Pig Association (BPA) and the British Pig
Executive (BPEX), providing co-ordination between Government
and the pig industry on export issues.
He also carries out consultancy work overseas,
including regular trips to China providing training and specialist
veterinary advice to the EU-China Water Buffalo Project. He was one of the founding directors, and chairs the Technical
Committee, of CHeCS (Cattle Health Certification Standards), a
self-regulatory body established in 1998 by the UK cattle industry
to set uniform standards for cattle health schemes for non-statutory
diseases.
He is a Past President of the British Cattle Veterinary
Association and is recognised as one of the leading experts in
the UK on biosecurity and health control programmes in cattle herds. |
